CHERY CLAIMS EFFICIENCY RECORD WITH NEXT-GEN SUPER HYBRID TECH

Chery Automobile Co., Ltd. has announced a major technical milestone: the unveiling of a petrol engine with a reported thermal efficiency of 48 per cent, as part of its all-new “Super Hybrid” powertrain platform. The Chinese automaker revealed the achievement at its recent International Technology Night event, highlighting its growing role in the global electrification drive.

This innovation forms a key pillar of Chery’s strategy: to position hybrid powertrains as a core stepping stone toward full electrification. By offering improved performance and fuel economy, the manufacturer aims to support carbon-reduction goals while delivering value to drivers.

Global R&D network fuels the breakthrough

Chery credits its eight global research and development centres (located across Europe, North America and Asia) for the new engine’s performance. This global R&D footprint enables the company to align its technology with different market requirements, while pushing the boundaries of internal-combustion efficiency.

Engineering highlights

The record-setting engine’s efficiency is thanks to a combination of advanced engine architecture and tuned systems. Among the key features are a 26:1 ultra-high expansion ratio, a 35 per cent exhaust-gas recirculation (EGR) rate and refined combustion-management systems aimed at minimising energy loss. According to Chery, this powerful mix pushes gasoline energy utilisation to the limits of current engineering.

Paired with an efficient hybrid transmission, this powertrain underpins the Super Hybrid platform – which spans from fuel-efficient 1.5-litre engines through to a high-performance 2.0 TGDI unit rated at up to 280 kW, and including a dual-motor vector system designed for off-road applications.

Smart, data-driven vehicle architecture

Beyond the powertrain, Chery is investing heavily in smart mobility, connected vehicle systems and integrated software and hardware ecosystems. Its Integrated Intelligent Driving Control Platform coordinates powertrain, chassis and body dynamics, tailored to regional driving behaviours — promising enhanced safety, comfort and energy efficiency.

Why this matters for New Zealand drivers

For Kiwi buyers exploring the Chery range (available through Winger Motors), this development signals more than just a headline. It means the brand’s future hybrids are designed with global engineering standards, and efficiency in mind for cost-of-ownership and strong suitability for NZ driving environments. Hybrid technology offers a bridge towards full electrification without compromising value for money, a core consideration for many buyers today.

Industry analysts expect hybrid powertrains to claim a growing share of the global new-energy-vehicle market by 2030. With this innovation, Chery is positioning itself strongly for that growth.
